A game inspired by pizza, Wario and nostalgic animation races onto Steam.

Pizza Tower is a 2D platformer strongly influenced by the Wario Land games from the ’90s and early 2000s along with the cartoons of that era. The game features hand-drawn animations for its characters and environments. Pizza Tower released Thursday on Steam for $19.99.

The game’s main character is named Peppino Spaghetti, who is described as, “a surprisingly agile and powerful fat balding Italian.” He must save his restaurant by taking down the Pizza Tower, which has a giant laser pointed at his pizza place.

The gameplay has a focus on fast-paced platforming, taking out enemies to string together combos and achieving high scores. Each level has several different floors to go through, with the Pizza Tower itself also having many stages. The increasing speed of the player’s movements is almost like the old Sonic the Hedgehog games. The player earns an accumulating score throughout each level and a final grade at the end of the stage by collecting items, saving pizza toppings and getting combos by eliminating enemies. When reaching the end of a level, the player must then race back to the entrance before time runs out as the music frantically plays. There are several unique boss fights to take on in the story. The levels also feature secrets to collect and bonus areas to discover.

The game is made by Tour De Pizza, which is primarily a one-man developer who goes by the moniker “McPig.” Pizza Tower’s soundtrack was mostly done by Mr. Sauceman and Frostix. Some of the game’s soundtrack can be listened to on Bandcamp.

The developer used Patreon to help fund the game’s creation, which launched in December 2018. The Patreon closed last December for new supporters and is currently at 560 patrons with $3,013 per month. Supporters will receive a Steam key and their name in the game’s credits. Pizza Tower has been in development for several years, since at least 2018. There have been demos and different builds of the game released over the past few years.

Pizza Tower features full controller support and 72 Steam Achievements.
