Spidey is swinging over to PlayStation in a big way.
A new Spider-Man game exclusive to the PlayStation 4 is currently in development, Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed at its E3 presentation on Monday.
The working title for the game is Spider-Man and being made by Insomniac Games, the Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and Sunset Overdrive developer.
Marvel Entertainment partnered with the Burbank, California-based Insomniac Games for the project’s development. Spider-Man will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and will only be available on the PS4.
Spider-Man is an open world game taking place in New York City. There’s an all-new costume in the game for Spider-Man featuring a white, red and blue design. The game’s universe and story are all brand-new, being created by Insomniac and Marvel. The PS4 game isn’t tied to the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” film in production for release next year through a partnership between Marvel and Sony Pictures.
Spider-Man on PS4 will focus on Peter Parker and his personal story about the clash in his life between his two worlds.
No release date was announced but Spider-Man has been in development for some time, according to Bryan Intihar from Insomniac, the game’s creative director. There’s a large team behind the game, with most of the studio working on Spider-Man. The reveal trailer features actual real-time visuals and gameplay that’s being currently developed, Insomniac said.
The most recent original Spider-Man games like Shattered Dimensions (2010) and Edge of Time (2011) were published by Activision and created by Beenox. The hero’s last title is based on the rebooted movies called The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that released in April 2014. Activision held the publishing rights for the Spider-Man property since the early 2000s, with a variety of developers creating the games like Neversoft, Treyarch, Beenox and others. The partnership between Marvel and Activision ended in early 2014.
Insomniac’s last open world game was Sunset Overdrive, which released exclusively for the Xbox One in October 2014. The studio recently put out a re-imagined Ratchet & Clank on PS4 this April. Insomniac has been closely tied to Sony during the studio’s 22 year history, making only exclusive games for the first three PlayStation consoles until branching out to other platforms in 2013.
