The first set of backwards compatible Xbox 360 games playable on the Xbox One includes 104 titles, Microsoft announced on Monday.
The 104 games make up retail discs, digital versions and Xbox Live Arcade releases bought on the Xbox 360. Downloadable content for each game will also be compatible on Xbox One.
Backwards compatibility will be available for all Xbox One owners with the release of the next major system update on Thursday, which redesigns the console’s dashboard and adds new features.
Many of the games were published by Microsoft Studios, with major publishers like Bethesda Softworks, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft also part of the list. There are no Activision games so far but Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) will come in the future.
The most requested games as voted on by the community like Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012) and Red Dead Redemption (2010) aren’t included in the first batch. Games like the BioShock franchise, Skate 3 (2010) and Halo: Reach (2010) are also confirmed for release into backwards compatibility later on. Hundreds of more games will be added in the future, according to Microsoft.
In December the next installment of games will be added, with more to come on a regular cycle. Games are added by publishers opting into the program. The games are running on Xbox One through emulation of the Xbox 360 operating system and include all the features of the original releases and console like Achievements and the Guide menu.
Microsoft announced in June that it would be bringing backwards compatibility to the Xbox One. Xbox One features can be used when playing Xbox 360 games, like streaming, taking screenshots and recording footage to the system’s DVR. Xbox 360 games can also be streamed to and played on PCs and laptops running Windows 10. Xbox One owners can also play multiplayer and co-op games with people on Xbox 360.
The free games given every month from Xbox Games with Gold will also be downloadable and playable on Xbox One Consoles. Xbox 360 games can still be purchased from the Xbox Marketplace digitally and added to the user’s library to play on Xbox One.
