Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection Tops PSN Downloads for September

In a new monthly post to highlight the best games on the PlayStation Network, Sony revealed the top 20 PSN Store downloads of September on Friday. The most downloaded game on the PlayStation 3 was Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s Mortal Kombat: Arcade Kollection, developed by Other Ocean Interactive.

The Kollection released in late August and costs $9.99. It features what NetherRealm Studios described as an “arcade-perfect port” of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, each with online multiplayer.

Even though the Arcade Kollection was PSN’s top downloaded title, the game has many problems, from various bugs to laggy online fights. Some players are referring to it as a lazy port that’s broken and unplayable. A patch was announced Sept. 2 by NetherRealm Studios, but more than a month later it still hasn’t been released.

The high-definition version of Capcom’s 2005 Resident Evil 4 was the second best seller. The game features improved visuals and Trophies. Resident Evil 4 costs $19.99, but was on sale for PS Plus members at $9.99 in September. From Dust by Ubisoft was the third highest seller. The god game allows players to manipulate environments to save an ancient tribe. In celebration of the franchise’s 15th anniversary, three classic Resident Evil games from the PlayStation era were on sale for half price. Two of them were in the top ten downloads.

At number eight, Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition was part of Sony’s “PSN Play” program last month and offered as a discount to PS Plus subscribers. The $9.99 PS One Classic Final Fantasy 7 rounded out the top ten. The game released two years ago on the PSN Store but is still one of its most popular games.

Coming in at the 16th spot is THQ’s Saint’s Row 2. On the PSN Store the game is a full download at 7GB for $19.99. It originally released in October 2008 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

The exact sales numbers for each game weren’t provided by the company. The top 20 downloaded games featured many titles that are also available on the Xbox 360 and several retro games. The list didn’t include games that were available as a free download for PlayStation Plus members, like Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.
