Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Will Use PSN Pass for Online Modes

Nathan Drake must discover an Online Pass among the ancient treasures to play multiplayer in the upcoming Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

Juan Jimenez, software manager for Sony Spain, confirmed to Spanish website The Vault on Friday that Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3 will require an Online Pass for its online multiplayer modes. A Sony representative also confirmed to GameSpot that Drake’s Deception will use the Online Pass. Without the Online Pass players won’t be able to access any of Uncharted 3’s online multiplayer and online co-op modes.

Jimenez claims the PSN Pass is to stop piracy on the PlayStation 3, although piracy traditionally hasn’t been a major problem for home consoles like it has for PC game releases. Game publishers like Sony, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft are putting the online pass vouchers into games in an attempt to curb used sales by retailers like GameStop and others.

Uncharted 3 is the second Sony first-party game to use the PSN Pass. Insomniac Games’ Resistance 3 began the program earlier this month. Drake’s Deception will release Nov. 1 exclusively for the PS3.

The one-time voucher code will come in all new copies of the game. Like other passes, Uncharted 3’s Online Pass will cost $9.99 on the PlayStation Network Store for those that don’t have the code. It hasn’t been confirmed if Uncharted 3’s pass will work for all PlayStation Network accounts on a user’s console like Resistance 3’s pass allows.

Players can get early access to the game’s online multiplayer during the “Taste for Adventure” promotion at Subway restaurants by purchasing a 30 ounce drink. Other bonuses like character skins for multiplayer can also be received.

The upcoming November release is the sequel to 2009’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Uncharted 3 will retail for $59.99.
