Uplay Passport for Driver: San Francisco Currently Free Due to Voucher Error
The online pass included in all new copies of Driver: San Francisco is on the road while missing a few wheels.
The latest installment to the Driver franchise by Ubisoft Reflections released today for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Inside all new copies of San Francisco is the Uplay Passport, a one-time voucher code to unlock the game’s online multiplayer modes.
Due to a printing error in the North American versions, some of the voucher code inserts only list 19 characters instead of the 25 needed for the code to be input properly. When players try to enter the current voucher they get an error message and are unable to redeem it. Some copies of the game are even completely missing the voucher code.
Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game are encountering the same problem. Ubisoft confirmed this error only affects the North American release of Driver: San Francisco.
In July Ubisoft announced its own online pass system called the Uplay Passport. Driver: San Francisco is the first game to use Ubisoft’s online pass. Similar to other online passes from publishers like Electronic Arts, THQ and Warner Bros. Entertainment, the Passport is needed to play San Francisco’s online multiplayer modes. Without it players can’t access those modes and are locked out of online multiplayer. The goal of the online pass is to reduce used game sales, which many publishers and developers believe hurt the game industry.
The Uplay Passport gives players access to San Francisco’s eleven multiplayer modes like Tag and Trail Blazer.
It also unlocks the game’s Film Director mode. In Film Director players can record five minute gameplay clips from the single player mode and edit them with different camera angles and other options to create a Hollywood movie-type scene. One minute clips can be uploaded to share with other San Francisco players.
Ubisoft announced a resolution to the problem today. For the time being, the Uplay Passport is free for all players. According to Ubisoft players can receive their Uplay Passport by following these steps within the game:
When you begin Driver: San Francisco, you are prompted with the Uplay Passport menu. The menu has 4 options: “Purchase Uplay PASSPORT,” “Activate my Uplay PASSPORT,” “Start my 2-Day Free Trial,” or “Remind Me Later” There are two ways to access these online features:
1. Select Start My 2-Day Free Trial, which will not expire, OR
2. Select Purchase Uplay Passport, which will be provided at no charge.Either option will unlock the 11 multiplayer modes and the Film Director feature on console titles with Uplay Passport.
Even those who buy Driver: San Francisco used or rent it should be able to get their own Uplay Passport for free.
This isn’t the first time online passes have encountered major problems in their execution. PS3 players couldn’t battle online with Mortal Kombat because the PlayStation Network Store was shut down as a result of the PlayStation Network being hacked several months ago. DiRT 3 had the same problem with its online pass. With the PSN Store down, players couldn’t redeem their online pass voucher codes or buy one in order to play online multiplayer.
The Uplay Passport is supposed to cost $9.99 on the PSN Store or 800 Microsoft Points on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Currently the Passport is not listed for download in either store. Ubisoft didn’t confirm how long it would keep the Uplay Passport free for the latest Driver game.
Driver: San Francisco will also be available for the PC on Sept. 27. The game retails for $59.99.
