Gears of War 3 Will Have $30 Season Pass at Launch, Includes Four DLC Add-Ons
Epic Games, the developer of Gears of War 3, announced today that the upcoming shooter will have a bundled discount for its downloadable content. Currently called the “Season Pass,” it includes the first four downloadable content packs planned for Gears of War 3. The Season Pass will cost 2,400 Microsoft Points ($30) on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
The pass will be available to purchase at the launch of the game on Sept. 20. The Season Pass gives players 33 percent off the regular price of the content. Purchased separately the four DLC packs will cost a total of 3,600 Microsoft Points or $45.
The first content pack is set to release later this November. Over the course of the next year the additional three add-ons will become available. Season Pass buyers also get the liquid metal weapon collection, a set of skins that changes the design of a player’s guns. It wasn’t announced if this weapon pack would be sold separately.
Players are essentially pre-ordering the future DLC packs for the Microsoft Studios published shooter and will own them when the content becomes available for download. The Gears of War 3 pass is like L.A. Noire’s Rockstar Pass and Mortal Kombat’s Season Pass for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
While Epic Games said the add-ons will bring “hours of campaign and multiplayer mayhem,” no additional details about the content were given by Epic Games or Microsoft. It’s not confirmed how much of the DLC will be multiplayer map packs like previous Gears of War packs or how many maps would be included. It’s also not confirmed if the story campaign content will be newly developed or just deleted sections left out of the retail release, similar to the “Road to Ruin” add-on in 2008’s Gears of War 2.
The pricing of each individual add-on and release dates weren’t confirmed either. By the wording of the announcement, there might be additional downloadable content for the game past the four add-ons.
At retail Gears 3 includes 10 multiplayer maps playable in Beast, Horde and competitive modes.
Epic Games also confirmed that Gears of War 3 is the fastest pre-ordered Xbox-exclusive franchise of all time with 1.3 million worldwide pre-orders.
The game will release Sept. 20 exclusively for the Xbox 360. The standard edition will retail for $59.99. Players who buy the regular version of Gears 3 and the Season Pass downloadable content will be spending close to $100 on the game if they want the complete Gears of War 3 experience.
